Sometimes the things in our family dynamic are simply unavoidable. How we look, sound and even the kinds of food and drink we enjoy can be inherited. They’re encoded in our DNA and reinforced through decades of real life familial interactions. We all know a bad family scene can feel like a real life horror movie. Hereditary plays with this authentic, universal experience and offers up a supernatural hook to make things even more harrowing.

If you love films such as Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist or The Omen, you’ll find a lot to like in Hereditary. Another modern effective chiller, The Empty Man, deals in a similar vibe, and can be looked at in the same powerfully transformational way - characters who no matter what they try to do, are drawn firmly back into a nightmare world because of circumstances or from inheriting the demons of their family.
