Way before Star Trek, we saw matter transportation perhaps most famously and frighteningly in the horror/sci-fi classic, The Fly.

I don’t know about you, but ever since seeing The Fly, I’m def in camp Dr. McCoy - Bones is right. Transporters sound like a great convenience, but you’d not catch me using them unless I really had no choice to have my atoms scattered all over the place.
Since then, Star Trek has used the concept liberally, and even Stargate employs a version using enormous ring devices. Though it’s all technobabble science fiction hooey, the Stargate system seems somehow more plausible - at least a smidgen.
