'The Six Million Dollar Man' - Best TV Show Opener In History

Steve Austin, astronaut, a man barely alive.... This sci-fi TV opener is the most compelling in television history. It tells a cool origin story and pumps us up for the dynamic action to follow.

With the unending inflation nightmare lately, The Six Million Dollar Man construction might cost sixty million in today’s dollars or even 600 million. How about 6 billion? Whatever the converted cost, the fact remains this iconic sci-fi spy adventure show still jazzes up its loyal fan base. The Bionic Man still packs quite an atomic powered wallop.

Starring Lee Majors as Colonel Steve Austin, the 1974 show tells the adventures of a tech rebuilt man, an against the odds survivor of a massive space vehicle accident. Dr. Rudy Wells turns Steve Austin into a super strong, telescopic seeing, insanely fast cyborg. The show remains an enduring classic and fully stands on its own, but I submit that its secret weapon lies in its incredible opening theme song and voice over narration.

Written and narrated by producer Harve Bennett (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) and Richard Anderson (Forbidden Planet), who plays OSI Chief Oscar Goldman, this is a television show open which completely captures one’s undivided attention. Its words are utterly dramatic and dynamic, and the theme song itself is instantly addictive. It’s melodically cool, easily hummed along to and sort of demands you to whistle it every chance you get. C’mon my Burly Bionic Beauties, let’s talk the science fiction goodness of The Six Million Dollar Man and his truly iconic opener.
