'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' Ilia's Theme 'A Star Beyond Time' Sung By Shaun Cassidy
Jerry Goldsmith Composed ST: The Motion Picture Soundtrack And Didn't Like A Lyrical Version Of Ilia's Theme Sung By Pop Star Shaun Cassidy
In 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture hit movie theaters as the first feature film based on the 1966 NBC Star Trek TV show. The Robert Wise directed film reunited Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Dr McCoy (DeForest Kelley) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy). It also brought back the original crew with Mister Sulu, Chekov and Uhura. This was a big budget, epic theatrical reunion aimed at the loyal fanbase.
The movie proved a box office hit. Although it divided some fans who felt it was lacking character development and unfinished special visual FX, most Trekkers appreciated the solid spectacle of this ultimately rousing sci-fi tale.
Many Trekkies don't know this musical overture or Ilia's Theme - music taken from the movie - was recorded with lyrics by actor and pop singer, Shaun Cassidy. Jerry Goldsmith composed the original instrumental version for the movie, then lyrics were written so Cassidy could sing a new version called, A Star Beyond Time. However, the song wouldn’t be released on the movie soundtrack in 1979, but much later was made available on a special album re-release.
