Star Wars may be infinitely more well known, but Space: 1999 came first. And it’s undeniable just how connected the two sci-fi franchises are to loyal fans of both space faring entertainment vehicles.
The British science fiction television show only ran for two seasons or series, but the Star Wars connection is powerful. In fact, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader mastermind George Lucas hired on Brian Johnson - the FX engineer on Space: 1999 - for producing visual effects in The Empire Strikes Back. And if only creator Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's show was allowed some more broadcast time, Star Wars could have literally saved the program.
