Sci-Fi Book Corner: What Is 'Star Trek Sex'?
My Book Focuses On Star Trek's Romantic, Playful & Sexual Side
Star Trek Sex? OKAY…. Say again? That’s the actual title of your book? You’re not kidding? WTF? Where’s the hidden camera, man? Is this some kinda prank show?
Yeah, that’s about the half of it or more. And trust me, that’s some of the more polite stuff I’ll get. It’s a question - or maybe more of an indictment - I’m asked more than a few times regularly.
Does it ever get old? Annoying? Frustrating? Weird? Let’s see… Mmmmm maybe!
Probing questions from mysterious strangers can often be very good things. Especially interesting are those attractive, mysterious strangers and even the accompanying probing parts they are known for by the initiated.
So, yes, I should ask myself and then answer it for you thusly, What exactly is my book Star Trek Sex all about? I mean, of course, besides the title of my Star Trek, original series, analysis book.
Romance Among The Stars
Broadcast for 10 seasons on ABC television, The Love Boat gave excited viewers a chance to celebrate shipboard cruise romances travelling to exotic ports of call on the world’s oceans. In many fundamental ways, however, a sci-fi love boat launched - Starfleet Starship - way before this TV family favorite.
Gene Roddenberry launched his Wagon Train To The Stars, and soon, his Star Trek original 1966 run gave us exotic shipboard romance - while travelling to awe inspiring alien worlds at warp speed among mysterious locations throughout the known, and unknown parts of our galaxy.
One of my favorite TOS tales, and one always on best of episode lists, is City On The Edge Of Forever. Dynasty superstar, Joan Collins, guest stars as Edith Keeler - the caring social worker who’s revealed to be the doomed love interest for James T. Kirk. The whole yarn is powered by an enigmatic, alien time travelling device known as The Guardian Of Forever, and this story, among so many others, typifies just how much the original series delved into the love lives of its main characters.
Overall, I tried to capture a similar vibe when I was researching and writing my book. When rewatching the original series episodes, I found so much of the stories were strongly connected to the love relationships of the noble, yet randy Enterprise crew. And it’s not just about romance or love for Captain Kirk - the others, Chekov, Scotty, McCoy, Sulu, Uhura and yes, even Mister Spock, all were treated to shipboard dalliances of one kind or another.
So, then, what reading material are you looking for my dear Trekkie or Trekker? Or maybe you’re just a plain old scifi fan? What kinds of books on Trek do you enjoy reading most? Star Trek may not have the record for most books written on any one subject, but it’s gotta be in the running. But any fan who buys them will tell you - so many of them read so similarly. If you’re looking for a book on Trek which isn’t simply another episode guide, exploration of alien cultures, satirical comedy, parody or advanced technology treknology, check out my book.
