Nichelle Nichols - More Than Star Trek's Lt. Uhura

The Singer And Actress Did Far More Than Acting Her Most Famous Sci-Fi Role
1

Star Trek fans best remember Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura, the Starfleet communications officer from the original series. And it’s no wonder she’s so fondly recalled in that breakout TV role. While fans could cheer on the other women characters such as Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) or Nurse Chapel (Majel Barrett), Uhura was a Command Officer and stationed on the bridge. She made a real difference in many adventures with her linguistic skills and language talents.

But, as is the case with all of us, she was more than one thing or persona.

Nichelle Nichols blazed a trail in entertainment. She may be best known for her performance as Uhura in Star Trek, but before that, and well afterwards, she did more work in Hollywood and also did much for her social activism pursuits. She was also a talented singer.
