Meat Loaf - A Rocky Horror Picture Show Spotlight
Meat Loaf As Eddie Put The Rock in Rocky Horror
Meat Loaf gets dripping juicy performing in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Huh? Hold the mobile smartphone, you say? Why am I talking about a beloved dinner entree in connection with one of the greatest cult sci-fi horror films ever? Well, my friend, you must be a true virgin to the rollicking RHPS phenomenon. Meat Loaf, in this case, isn’t a delish dish swimming in mouth watering gravy. This meaty treat is the one and only singer, Meat Loaf - star of both RHPS and the lead vocalist on the legendary Bat Out Of Hell album.
Meet Mister Meat
Born Marvin Lee Aday in Dallas, Texas, the full framed singer known for his booming vocals and outrageous onstage antics, took on his lip smacking lunch inspired stage name early in his career. The nickname Meat Loaf was gifted to him by his high school football coach. We can all greatly thank the sports gods that Mr. Meat didn’t pursue his pigskin sport for very long.
Musician Meat Loaf, like the popularity of his culinary namesake, pleases our taste buds as an internationally popular vocalist - documented as one of the best-selling musical artists in recording history. His collaboration with composer Jim Steinman, on the mega hit album, Bat Out Of Hell, produced one of the best selling albums of all time - as of this date selling an astounding over 50 million units.
Because of his awesome rock/pop music success, many think Meat began as a recording star, but Mister Loaf started a career as a stage actor. Something which led him to one of his most famous and iconic roles, as Eddie, the bad boy biker rocker featured in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The Rocky Horror Rocker
When Eddie said he didn't like his Teddy, You knew he was a no-good kid
But when he threatened your life with a switchblade knife
What a guy! Makes you cry, Und I did - Eddie, From The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Meat Loaf played the Eddie role in the original LA Roxy Cast and also the NYC Broadway version, but it would be the 1975 feature film which would propel both he and the rest of the Tim Curry led cast into the cult film stratosphere.
Meat Loaf’s big scene in the film is when he’s defrosted from Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s lab. Eddie teases all around him as a kind of rough and tough playboy and player to pretty much everyone he meets. He had a romantic relationship with the mad, alien Doctor. Evidently, Eddie pissed Frank-N-Furter off enough for him to end up in the cooler as a hunk of frozen meatloaf.
Ultimately, Eddie zooms out of the freezer on his thunderous hog to croon the song, Hot Patootie, Bless My Soul. Here’s the catchy chorus: Hot patootie, bless my soul, I really love that rock and roll
What follows theatrically and musically seduces us as one of the best, dynamic and certainly the most Rock n Roll laden tracks from the film. Eddie blows his saxophone like a musical maniac and dances up a storm with Columbia, played by actress Little Nell or Nell Campbell.
For any Meat Loaf fan, or just dedicated lovers of rock n roll, The Rocky Horror Picture Show remains one of the greatest celebrations of science fiction, horror and thunderous rock and roll music. Meat Loaf makes the movie more fun and authentic, and his signature scene is something you’ll want to replay and revisit again and again.
