George Takei Hated Playing Sulu On Star Trek The Animated Series
The Star Trek Original Series Actor Voiced Helmsman Sulu But Never Warmed Up To The Production Process
Even the most hardcore, loyal Trekkers often forget that original Star Trek from 1966 became an award winning animated program. As a Saturday morning cartoon, kids discovered the sci-fi Starship, yet their parents and other adults could also enjoy the program.
This outstanding series even won an Emmy Award for its creative efforts. It appeared like a win-win all around, yet not everyone was enjoying themselves.
George Takei played helmsman Mister Hikaru Sulu on sci-fi Star Trek, yet some fans may not know about his role in The Animated Series. This 1973 cartoon show was guided by creator Gene Roddenberry. The devoted creator brought back most of the original live action series writers and actors. It was well received by critics and fans, however, George Takei didn't enjoy the exacting process of bringing the animated show to life. In fact, he hated it.
