Captain Janeway Shows Bad Leadership in Voyager Pilot, 'Caretaker'

Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager doesn't instill confidence, professionalism nor fair play in two of her key subordinates during the show pilot, 'Caretaker'.

We’ve all seen some bad scenes go down in say at work, while on the job or while studying at school. Perhaps even in the clubs or sports teams we are part of, we’ve been witness to people not playing nicely with each other. Bad sportsmanship. Bad leadership. What if such toxic interaction happens during a life and death mission? Say, while trying to complete a dangerous Starfleet mission…

Bad crew behavior occurring on any vessel can start right off at the top. Bad leadership, sadly, often makes it happen. Although Star Trek may only be a sci-fi universe chronicling the exploits of fictional Captains and Starships, there’s definitely a few real life lessons to be learned here.

I’ve got a backstory beef with Tom Paris. Captain Janeway could care less.

Starfleet trains their hard working explorer professionals exceedingly well, and Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) usually displays admirable efficiency when commanding her dependable crew. Unfortunately, right at the outset, in the pilot episode, Caretaker, she shows incredibly bad leadership skills.

C’mon my vivid, voracious Voyagers, let’s discuss how Captain Kathryn Janeway introduced her first officer to her newly recruited Starfleet Observer, Tom Paris, played by Robert Duncan McNeil, and the possible later crew morale repercussions at her action or inaction.
